Grandin Mall Reconstruction Details Still Up In Air
SINC SAYS:
There has been very little in local papers regarding just what will happen to current businesses in Grandin Mall during the redevelopment phase expected in the spring. I wanted to know if mall merchants were any better informed, so I shot an e-mail off to Barb over at Bad Girlz clothing store in the mall to see if she could enlighten readers on progress to date.
You can judge for yourselves how well informed mall merchants are on the situation. Thanks for the update Barb, which follows:
Don,
We haven't heard anything about the mall and when the development will begin. I don't know what will become of the store as we are hoping to be able to remain here while the construction is under way. Everything is very up in the air right now.
Two of us have submitted our names to sit on the downtown task force. We are hoping that just because we didn't want to pay for a BRZ doesn't mean that nothing should be done. We just don't want a huge bill at the end.
I just hope that they realize what the biggest hurdle is, and that is St. Albert itself. We struggle like any small city which is basically a bedroom community to a close larger center.
St. Albert seems to have an identity crisis with some wanting it to thrive and grow, and some that just want a quiet place to come home to after work. Both are fine but they can work against each other too, as we've seen at
election time.
I’m optimistic seeing some of the larger chains coming into our city. I'm hoping that will help people see that almost everything they need is right here in St. Albert and maybe change the mindset of heading into Edmonton.
