Matthews’ Surprise Return Is Good For CFL

"The one thing that I've finally figured out is that I'd rather be at the top of the mountain as a hated person than at the bottom ... as a loved person."
- Don Matthews, 2004
It has been almost two years since Don Matthews left Montreal - after close to five years as the head coach of the Alouettes - under mysterious circumstances and conditions.
He said he resigned for health reasons. We suggested he was fired after the Als, who began the 2006 season with seven straight victories, lost their next six before Matthews won his final game as Montreal's head coach. People in the organization to this day swear it was the former and, really, is there any point regurgitating history?
The Don is back and, for one day at least, the Argonauts become front-page news in Toronto, with nearly everyone talking about the Canadian Football League. That's all that matters. And it's good to have him back - at least for those of us who don't have to deal with him on a daily basis. Better them than us is what every beat writer outside Toronto is thinking today.
More from the Montreal Gazette.
SWIVEL HIPS SAYS:
Only time will tell what kind of outrageous stunts “The Don” tries to pull this time around.
