Are Newspapers St. Albert's Biggest Polluters?

Wednesday my copy of the St. Albert Gazette arrived in my mailbox around 5:00 p.m.

It was filled with 17 separate flyers that frankly stunk as bad as the newspaper itself and outweighed the very paper it was inserted into. It weighed much more than I expected and frankly in spite of my years in the newspaper business, has become offensive to me and many others who resent so much paper.

Now that they have dropped all this stinky paper on my doorstep, it not only becomes my problem to get rid of it, it also becomes the city of St. Albert's problem as well.

So, just how much does it cost taxpayers to get rid of that 'pollution'? Who pays to rid ourselves of the massive amounts of paper newspapers deliver to us each week?

City council is so good at adopting silly bylaws in the name of the environment, isn't it time they passed one to ban flyer delivery within city limits? With so many flyers now being delivered online, maybe it's time to rid ourselves of paper pollution.

Give it a think folks, it is worth saving us a few tax dollars? More importantly, why are we paying to clean up after companies that own newspapers?
