Frost Amplification Zone

This is in St-Pierre, behind Val Dirène in the Gaspésie in Quebec. It is the frost build up - sort of like the ice storm but this was a frost storm. The official term is a ZAG...zone d'amplification du givre (frost amplification zone).

Yes, those are miles and miles of trees that look like marshmallows (don't ask how much weight is on the transmission tower.)

An inmate on death row in an Ohio prison got hold of some pills and overdosed on them just hours before his scheduled execution.

Guards found him unconscious and rushed him to the emergency ward of a local hospital.

Hospital medical staff have so far refused to release him saying that he is still in critical condition.

Prison officials have stayed the execution, but only for a week so he can recover.

Then they’re going to kill him.

Spring Is Just Around The Corner . . .

Nindigully Road Train Burger

The tiny township of Nindigully is located on the edge of the Queensland outback - 160km west of Goondiwindi, about 530km west of Brisbane, and approximately 70 km north of the Queensland/New South Wales border.

Nindigully Pub is Queensland's oldest hotel, located in its original condition and position on the banks of the Moonie River. The licence was issued in 1864 after operating as shearers accommodation for the Nindigully Station.

The "boom" town has now been reduced to just two houses, the pub, the old general store and the town hall, with a population of six!

Nevertheless, it was voted the Best Country Pub in Australia in 2006 by 44 Australia magazine, and you can see why - it has become famous for its truckie's feed of the Nindigully Road Train Burger.

This giant hamburger is served with French fries, onion rings and a selection of sauces, says it will feed 1- 4 people, and costs $36 - the meat patty alone is 1.2kg!

How do you reckon you'd go?

The cell phone rep got him the help he needed in a roundabout way.

...Yes, one of the very positive things, as you relay, about the organization is that it gets back to the basics: Kids having fun and learning new skills. There is no pressure because the team encourages participation of players in all levels of skill. There is no tolerance for lack of acceptance, but frankly, I have never seen a problem within the league; which is wonderful!

There was one little girl, for example, who began at the start of the season holding on to the sides of the rink boards and by game season end, you would not have been able to distinguish her from the team-mates!

There are a few rules for players to abide by, such as, those who are particularly skillful can score up to 4 goals, but after that, they must pass the puck to allow peers opportunity to be successful. Kudos to all the coaches and parents who give freely of their time each year to make this a success for the kids. : )

...We’re always happy to help out a local group or organization Velvet.

...It's my morning chuckle and sometimes a trip to another country.

...Congratulations on the 250,000th hit on the website. Who'da thunk it when you came up with this idea that it would be such a success. It's how I start almost every morning, when I miss a day I catch up the next.

...(Do I have to tell you this is another former co-worker folks?)

“Women who enjoy a glass or two of wine a day put on less weight than those who stick to mineral water or soft drinks, research shows - with red wine particularly forgiving. The finding, from a long-term study of almost 20,000 women, suggests that the body processes the calories in alcohol differently to those in food.”

So girls, hit the wine store and slim right down.

...March 9th - The Woman’s Show with Kate Ammar, Lisa B, Donna Jibaroo, Maria Reid, and Mary Thomas featuring an all woman’s open stage.

This night is intended to show off all the talented of female musicians in and around our area.

I have had the pleasure to watch, listen and play along with a lot of the great female performers we’ve met.

Kate is a mostly choir trained singer who shows guts live and plays a little guitar and will show off some original material accompanied by the house band and her good friend and very talented Zara Domino on (guitar). I asked Kate (my daughter) to host this first time all ladies show and she is very excited for this evening to happen.

Lisa B I have seen numerous times on drums and recently watched her play guitar and sing. Great touch drummer and we will use Lisa on drums, guitar and vocals through the night.

Donna Jibaroo is a great funky blues style bass player who also sings and dabbles on drums and other instruments I am sure. I have had the pleasure to sit in at a couple of gigs with Donna and she showed off her great fronting talents at both gigs.

Maria Reid was the first female drummer I got a chance to see at our open stages back in 2003. Great clock drummer keeping very good timing and always sticking to the meat and potatoes style to keep the time right for the rest of the stage. Maria also played along side Wayne Allchin in a band called backfire for a stint and last we spoke she was looking to put together her own act.

Mary Thomas has to be on of the busiest ladies on the music scene and I am sure a lady a lot of the guys and girls would consider one of the leading vocalists in our area. Fronting the Mary Thomas band she also kept herself very busy on the open jam scene running her own open stages for over 10 years. Also had a stint hosting at the renowned Blues on Whyte. This girl lights up any stage I have ever seen her on and I think will bring in a killer set with the house band.

...I picked this house band to be the sit in and back up band for anyone who shows up to play and this night will be dedicated to my late mother Basma Ammar who was a hand drummer and would have been so proud to see this night for the girls.

...Every Tuesday night from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

...<script src="http://apps.bravenet.com/go.js?

...I thought I would send share some photo shots from the WONDERFUN HOCKEY ASSOCIATION last game of the season at Servus Place.

...My husband, John, has participated as coach and equipment manager for several years. The organization is a fantastic educational and athletic experience for children. Thanks to all the great parents who participate in making the year a success!

...Our youngest son, Alex, who is 12, is on the ice with team-mates. There is a brief description about the organization from this website.

...**Wonderfun Hockey is now eligible for the Child Fitness TaxCredit!

...We are a small community organization of parents that have been running an outdoor hockey program for kids 6-13 for about 15 years now.

We are designed as an alternative to the traditional minor hockey program which often requires lots of travel, cost and pressure on the kids. There is no pressure to show up, perform or do anything more than challenge yourself and learn how to play hockey. The kids sign up for a rink and always play at that rink at that time against the same kids.

...Albert from the first week in January to the last week in Feb. It is a short season but the kids play twice a week for one hour. The first 15-20 minutes of every session is designed to teach hockey and skating skills. The last 40-45 minutes is a scrimmage against their own players to solidify the skills just learned.

We Provide a non-contact, fun environment for children 6-13 to experience hockey. Wonderfun is not in competition with St. ... In keeping with our philosophy of fun and enjoyment, players in SAMHA are not encouraged to participate in Wonderfun to use it as extra ice time.

...It seems to me this is a much better alternative than driving kids into organized hockey where they learn to fight and parents hang on dreams of their offspring becoming NHL stars. It kind of reminds me of the old days when hockey was for kids and by kids and future NHL players “just happened”. A reader near Lethbridge sent us this old copy of the rules from the Macleod Hotel back in the 1800’s. Good thing today’s hotels have changed those rules, isn’t it?

My sister has joined me for this segment of my trip, as our main purpose is to visit a cousin who is convalescing in hospital.

...My sister is a fellow food adventurer and like me, she does not like to eat in any place that she can eat at back home.

So we are on the hunt for something quick, but out of the ordinary for us.

...I’ve had more than my fill of Mexican and Tex-Mex fare lately but my sister can go for it.

...I scan the menu and to my delight, I find something I have never eaten for breakfast, or any meal to my knowledge, anywhere.

...The glazed cinnamon raisin biscuit looks very interesting too, so we get one of those to share.

Carl’s Jr. isn’t busy this morning, maybe 10 other customers in here at the time and interestingly all seniors, except for us.

...The staff behind the fast food counter were coming out from behind the counter opening the door for customers and greeting them by name. ... Now that’s something you don’t often see in a fast-food restaurant.

...My sister was so enthused with her side of mini hockey puck shaped hash browns, she asked what they were called, expecting some cutesy trade name.

...My pork chop on a biscuit was surprisingly good, and it was a real pork chop, not a formed patty of pork-like product. It was also breaded and fried, with a generous helping of southern white gravy.

...Later on that day after we had checked into the hotel we asked about the local places to eat. We wanted something that was a reflection of Oklahoma City, something that offered Oklahoma southern style food and drink.

...My sister orders a chicken fried steak with gravy, I found myself a mess o’ southern fried catfish with an unusual side of a baked sweet potato with both melted marshmallows and a drizzled caramel sauce to top.

...I was the driver for this Oklahoma leg of my journey so I wasn’t going to touch alcohol. My sister however, was welcome to go for it and she found the house specialty drinks.

...When my sister had finished about half of her drink, the waiter, who knew we were from Canada, informed her that there was a two-drink limit for these teas.

...He informed us that the drink contained not one, but two shots of liquor, one of which was 151 proof Everclear.

...However, most alcoholic spirits such as rum and vodka are 80 proof range, so this was kicked up a notch from the norm.

...Watching her ricochet off the tables and chairs like a pinball after one drink proved the alcohol content was significant and made me glad I was driving.

...Then a generous portion of peppered white gravy is poured over the fried steak and served, typically with mashed potatoes.

...Even though my sister could not even come close to finishing the steak, the sausage-based gravy was so good that she scraped it off and ate it with the potatoes.

Yes, I know, a coronary attack on a plate – thankfully we don’t eat this way very often.

Bacon And Chocolate Rank High In Recipes

SINC SAYS:

North Americans taste for bacon just never seems to waiver.

Well, he is entitled to his opinion, but not everyone will agree.

On your way out the door with the merchandise you’ve paid for, you are asked to show the greeter (or maybe door guard is a better term) your receipt.

It never makes me happy. Why, you ask?

Because the store assumes that everyone is a thief and that bothers me. That said, I have always shown my receipt.

But one guy refused.

...By building homes at low cost, requiring very little or no down payment, and not charging interest on the mortgage, Habitat for Humanity is able to provide an opportunity, or a “hand up”, to buy a home for families that would not otherwise qualify for a conventional mortgage.

...Habitat homes are bought, and paid for, by the people who are living there. They are not 'handouts', and the people living there are carefully vetted to make sure they're working or have a steady income.

...Aaron's mother may have actually qualified for a Habitat home, but it wouldn't have been a 'handout'. Most people who get Habitat homes are just average people who play by the rules - except that housing now-a-days has become totally unaffordable to people living on the bottom end of the economic scale. These people can afford rent - but they know, just as you and I know, that the best way to live and gain equity is to own a home, not make endless rent payments that don't build equity. ... People who get Habitat homes are good citizens, and their homes do not 'detract' from the property values of their neighbours. Furthermore, the 'sweat equity' clause of the purchase means that people who get a Habitat home will then work to help others.

...Albert, but I do have an opinion on the actual Habitat program, and really wish people would learn about the program before disparaging it as another 'handout'.

...I’m never sure how people can pull off an illusion like this, but it’s a good one folks.

...I got a pleasant surprise when I pulled up in front of Graham & Associates brand new premises at 110 - 20 Circle Drive in Campbell Park on the north side of Servus Place. It was quite a contrast to their old location, but I was in for an even bigger surprise when I opened the door.

...I’ve been dealing at Graham & Associates for a dozen years or more now dating back to the first time I met company founder Peggy Graham.

The firm is now ably managed by daughter Wendy and her staff and the pride in their new premises is etched on the faces of staff members.

...The business has its roots some 25 years ago in the basement of Peggy’s home and has grown to what it is today.

If you are in the market for someone to prepare your 2009 tax return, look no further that Graham & Associates.

It is no surprise to me that their clients number well over 4,000 individual accounts and their solid base of business accounts continues to rise.

Years of experience combined with their knowledge of Canadian tax law will make your return simple and easy with Wendy and her staff advising you all the way on savings you might otherwise never know about.

...You can also claim any travel medical insurance you may have purchased as well as any fees paid to a long-term care facility.

And if you have to travel to get proper treatment, you may be able to claim some of those expenses too.

...Did you know that taxpayers can allot up to half their eligible pension income to a spouse or common-law partner?

...And if you’ve ever wondered if you should purchase RRSPs or need a financial planner, Graham & Associates can help you as well.

...Open special longer hours Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through the end of April.

It sure isn’t anyone who can think for themselves.

Pretty much typical six year old behaviour, isn’t it?

...How can the city expect anyone to pay good money to live there and more importantly what about all the young families that actually had to buy their homes? ... I suppose now in today’s society we owe it to everyone to buy them a house, if they are unable or unwilling to make the sacrifice needed to save for a single family dwelling.

My father died at an early age and my single mother had to work very hard to afford a good home for me and my brother in Akinsdale, I suppose today she should have just waited for a free home at someone else’s expense. Sorry if this is politically incorrect but someone has to speak up for the average people who plays by the rules.

...Cam, thanks for taking the lead on this and very eloquently speaking for the silent majority of people residing in St. ... You always made up your own mind on issues and we're not one to follow the crowd.

I remember when you were in high school and just purchased your first vehicle. In your condo complex where you grew up, there was a bylaw that stated that you had to move your car every 48 hours. One day you and three other residents received a $200 fine for not moving your vehicles. Instead of cowering in the dark, you stood up for yourself and the others affected. You created your own newspaper and delivered it to every resident of the complex pointing out the folly and injustice in their actions. In the end you won and the condominium board backed down and disregarded the fines.

I'm glad you are still standing up for the little guy! Keep it up and if you ever get a chance look me up in the phonebook.

...It is a sad day when the city loses any green space Aaron. Growing up there, you would know what that means for youngsters. ... As a matter of fact it is the type of innovative thinking that this council has demonstrated itself incapable of, on some issues in the past. Let’s hope they listen to Akinsdale residents, both past and present.

...One of the main reasons I wanted to pen a few articles for the Saint City News was to provide a counterpoint to the divisive political tactics that we have not before seen within our community. Federally or provincially, wedge politics are distasteful yet acceptable as you are often dealing with a political boundary, abstract political concepts or impersonal groups that are singled out. There is a big difference between attacking “industry” or “CUPE” for example versus attacking the community of Akinsdale which people call home. Municipal politics govern the affairs closest to the individual and as a result these politics affect citizen’s lives on a personal level. The phrase “NIMBY” has an interesting double entendre in that if it is not in your backyard, how much right do you have to affect someone else’s democratic entitlement to self determination? You can build a political platform and even a successful campaign based on wedge politics but one thing you will not build is a community.

Earlier this week there was an article in the St. ... The article explained that the 62 unit condominium complex on Sturgeon Road has ceased construction since the summer of 2009 and has been in limbo for almost 2 years. Apparently the dev eloper of this project has been hit hard by the credit crunch and does not have the requisite funds needed to complete the project. The article goes on to quote realtor Amal Monzer as saying, “...construction won’t proceed until 10 units are sold. But the developer isn’t able to specify a completion date, making it unlikely that buyers or bankers will be interested.” Not surprisingly our mayor’s reaction was to say “We want it finished so we can collect the tax revenue out of it.”

...In dealing with complex issues like affordable housing, rarely does an obvious solution present itself upon a silver platter and yet oddly goes completely unnoticed by all of our politicians. We have a proposed project in Akinsdale that reduces the quality of life for the residents, diminishes the character of the neighbourhood and threatens the home equity they have all worked so hard for. ... The proposed transaction would result in 15 low cost Habit for Humanity homes and 43 for a private developer at a cost of $840,000 to the City of St.

...Why does the city not call Amal Monzer, and use this $840,000 for a down payment on 15 units in the partially completed Braeside condominium? The city could then donate these housing units to Habitat for Humanity who would then re-assign mortgages and ownership, thereby reconstructing a similar deal to that proposed in Akinsdale. Since the complex is 80% complete, Habitat would easily be able to bring in the potential home owners for their required 500 hours of “sweat equity” construction work to complete these units.

...Among the various alternatives, this is a potential solution that will satisfy Akinsdale residents, satisfy affordable housing advocates and is a solution everyone in St. ... I realize that this would derail city council from its dual focus of tax collection and new spending projects, but if you are looking for a politically and socially viable win-win scenario for all stakeholders, you will not find a better option to pursue.

...Well, Cam, that is certainly a grand idea and it would do the world of good to solve both issues. Here is a real opportunity for Mayor Crouse and his council to show some real leadership and prove once and for all that tax money does not rule their thinking. But are they big enough to change course and do something good for all of the city?

When I did, I usually flew business class and always asked for an aisle seat.

The times I flew economy though, that aisle seat became much more important.

There was nothing worse than being sandwiched into the middle seat on a long flight.

But now airlines are charging you if you want an aisle seat.

And that’s just the beginning.

It’s not long until the cops give chase and they try to outrun the cruiser.

It doing so, they inadvertently turn into a military base and roar through the guarded front gate.

A security guard opens fire and kills the 16-year-old passenger and wounds the driver.

Now get this, the cops charge the driver with murder because his actions caused the death of his friend.

Only in America.

If you live on a farm and return home from work, you might very well expect to see cattle.

But not likely in your house.

That’s exactly what happened to a woman in Arkansas when she got home one evening.

Cows had broken in and made themselves at home, so to speak.

They even used the bedroom for a nap.

Had you noticed that St. Albert has reverted to having Bus Stops again?

They are no longer called Transit Zones.

And I heard a whisper that there is a bike rack on the front of at least one city bus.

Then you grab your cell phone and snap a picture of junior with a big smile on his face.

No harm in that, right?

Nope, wrong.

...A woman walks into the downtown welfare office, trailed by 15 kids.

'WOW,' the social worker exclaims, 'are they all yours?’

'Yep, they are all mine,' the flustered momma sighs, having heard that question a thousand times before.

...All the children rush to find seats.

'Well,' says the social worker, 'then you must be here to sign up. I'll need all your children's names.'

'Well, to keep it simple, the boys are all named Leroy and the girls are all named Leighroy.'

In disbelief, the case worker says, 'Are you serious? They're ALL named Leroy?'

Their momma replied, 'Well, yes-it makes it easier. When it's time to get them out of bed and ready for school, I yell, 'Leroy!' An' when it's time for dinner, I just yell 'Leroy!' ... An' if I need to stop the kid who's running into the street, I just yell Leroy' and all of them stop. It's the smartest idea I ever had, namin' them all Leroy.'

The social worker thinks this over for a bit, then wrinkles her forehead and says tentatively, 'But what if you just want ONE kid to come, and not the whole bunch?'

'Then I call them by their last names.'

...Machado means “shredded” in Spanish and for this dish the name has come to mean the shredded air cured and crispy beef that it contains.

...As a Panaderia customer, you pick up a large tray and a set of tongs and then help yourself to the bakery items behind sliding or hinged glass doors. When you have all you want or can afford (budget or health wise) on your tray you bring it to the cashier who will tally your order and move all of your baked goods to paper bags.

...Giant floor standing mixers and dough kneading machines with dangerous looking mixing arms were waiting for their next batch of ingredients.

...Jesus was up high for His best vantage point to watch over the bakers and bakery.

These bakers start working while most of us are still sound asleep in our beds and not likely to rise for hours. Brownsville is not a particularly dangerous city and this Panaderia wasn't in a rough neighborhood. It just made all of the employees, both men and women, feel much better with the crucifix hanging there in a high central position.

...While he granted my request, I realized later I should have added “and from eating out of the bags that anyone else in our group may have.”

...Next was a small family owned tamale shop, Ybarra Tamales, in a house right along a busy highway service road in Brownsville. The store area itself was barely 15 square feet, just a little window counter at which fresh, literally homemade, tamales are purchased.

...Women had to travel with the men to prepare their food whether it was to the food growing fields or the battlefields.

In what was probably a desperation move, someone figured out that they could put ground corn (an ancient staple food) and fillings if available, into something that had little other use, a corn husk.

...The chiles would not only give the tamales some flavor, but it would help preserve them for longer periods. The men could easily take them wherever they went and eat them whenever convenient, cold or re-heated directly over a fire or on a hot pottery surface.

...Consequently, they made a special place for tamales in all their festivities, particularly Christmas.

...Made with corn flour, chile sauce, pork lard and a variety of fillings, these are not food for the faint of heart. Many have tried to make them without the lard, but they just don't have the same appeal - sort of like drinking reconstituted powdered milk.

...Upon return to Chef’s house, we discover that while we were away the feral hogs were at play.

...The business discussions continue while I am trying to get some night shots of the house and yard. ... I take my tripod out and keep moving away and away again from the house trying to get the optimal angle.

...The taste trip to the Land of Texico is over for now and our team must split up in many directions the next morning. ... We all have much work to do in the next month before filming will start.

I will be taking a few days to stop over in Oklahoma to visit a relative before I return to Calgary.

Imaginative Paper Art

This item was sent in to us by Mayor Crouse. ...Lori Fabian and Nina Carpenter each provide excellent perspectives: Realistically, it is not a positive venture to establish an expansive residential facility within the confines of an over-crowded neighbourhood such as Akinsdale. Frankly, construction invites potentially disastrous consequences and therefore, I cannot support an unfavourable plan that poses a safety risk to members of the community.

...Indeed, it is necessary to establish an affordable living space, making St. Albert an inviting place for diverse populations of individuals to dwell. Frankly, I am quite concerned with the financial educational demands and rising costs that challenge young persons. As a parent, I am well aware of the implications of absence of affordability. However, needed housing cannot simply be permitted to arise based upon cost effectiveness. Safety within any community must be prioritized and remain the ultimate deciding factor.

...The park space at Arlington Drive has provided a haven for children in the community throughout many years. A school is located nearby as well as a neighbourhood childcare centre which regularly employs the area to facilitate active recreational play and team sports. Clearly, middle-ground must emerge wherever consideration of establishing a new housing area arises. Naturally, reservation and opposition to building within the confines of an already condensed, long established and populated area. It is necessary to listen to critics because valid safety concerns cannot be denied. At the same time, we must continue to brainstorm collectively to achieve support for a viable living area venture sufficient to carry the impact of numerous residents safely.

...If council thinks this issue is going to go away anytime soon, they had better think again. If they force such a high density of multi family homes on the people of Akinsdale, they do so at their peril.

It’s a dirty job folks, but someone has to do it.

Teach school that is.

A US substitute teacher is in big trouble for breaking up a fight in his classroom.

Two young goons tackled each other and the teacher grabbed one of them by the neck to break it up.

Now that precious little snowflake has complained he has red marks and a full investigation is underway.

He shudda kicked his ass.

Last week we told you about a woman with large love handles that stopped a bullet and saved her life.

Not to be outdone, a woman in Los Angles was saved from certain death when shot with a high powered rifle at point blank range.

Did her love handles play a role?

I guess it depends on your definition of love handles. ;-)

The tale is here.

...Albert and using these returns to see if the individual residents would be able to afford an “average mortgage payment” and that this “mortgage payment” would not exceed 32% of their income.

...Albert is a city that is unaffordable for 8,000 residents to live in, then we are left with the paradoxical question: How are they affording to live here now? ... Further investigation suggests that a large portion of the 15% figure is seniors residing in their own home that has a clear title, and that these seniors live with a reduced pension income. Other populations represented in this 15% figure are people aged 18 – 29 living in their parent’s home, and who are saving for a down payment or who are going to post secondary schools.

...Recently the Chamber of Commerce came out in support of affordable housing as they saw this as a way of attracting low income workers to St.

...The city’s assessed property taxes create situations whereby seniors have to move away due to unaffordable taxes and young families choose to live elsewhere when they realize that they can purchase a larger home outside of St. ... The end result is that we will not create a more affordable community but a community comprised of the very wealthy and the very poor.

In the end analysis, City Hall is more interested in carving out additional tax revenue rather than to seriously quantify and address the issue of affordable housing. The property at 70 Arlington Drive in Akinsdale was not chosen because of its suitability or due to any pressing need, it was chosen as it is the quickest way for the city to increase tax revenue to gloss over their wasteful spending. If this was not the case, we would be looking at allocating any of the 1300+ hectares of annexed land to affordable housing, creating a land bank or partnering with the Edmonton region to look for solutions.

...All too often we simply take politician’s word for figures and it looks to me like that 15 percent number is far from correct.

...I often refer to the current administration as “Robbing Hood And His Merry Band Of Men” for picking the pockets of the poor to enhance the lifestyle of the rich in this city, $ervu$ Place being but one glaring example.

...Did you get your copy of the new $ervu$ Place glossy brochure that had to cost thousands of our tax dollars in the Gazette on Wednesday? I see that only as more wasted tax dollars, appealing to nearly half the residents of this city who do not have the means, nor desire to afford to use that White Elephant in the first place.

...The Gucci and Lexus taste of this administration must be stopped before they build themselves a new Taj Mahal (city hall) to go along with their lavish governance of this city.

...12 adults attended a training session, where 11 class members have been told to give the wrong answer to a certain question when it is posed to the group.

...After some discussion the member who gave the correct answer, against his better judgement, gives in to the majority, even though he is 100 percent sure his answer was right and the rest were wrong.

I think this is what happens in our council, even if we had a whole new council elected, administration convinces them into thinking their way.

...But now that they have been elected, if I asked for help solving a problem from the same now councillor, I would be told the problem doesn’t exist in St.

...Isn’t it odd that so many local residents think the problems we face with over taxation is directly the result of an out of control administration?

The most disturbing part of it all is that not one member of the past three councils has had the cajones to do the right thing and rid ourselves of the lot of them.

..."...but Canada, my home and where I chose to come back to for good reasons, has not come face to face with the realities of the next century. We are still building monuments to ourselves, and what I mean is that elected officials seem to want to point to some expensive structure and say "my blood and sweat is responsible for bringing this marvel of engineering to you and future generations."

...Plain etc.) to have the integrity and foresight to say to yourselves and to your neighbours that you have put into place a sound MDP for the 90's that will take St.

WEBBITS

A roundup of bits from the web:

Although he did not become either an accountant or lawyer, he feels that having these goals kept him on the right track through his formative years. Goal setting has always been important for Van Damme, who is now setting his sights on a position on St. ... “We need to have vision and goals, and everyone is more concerned about the year-to-year budgets,” he says.

In his work experience as a consultant in enterprise risk and information technology, James Van Damme has consulted with business of all sizes, including some Fortune 500 companies.

...In an attempt to investigate further to discover where taxes have been going, Van Damme discovered that it is hard to get answers. This led him to the belief that we need more transparency and accountability on city council, as to where tax dollars are going. “It’s not about being the highest,” he says, “it’s what you get for being the highest.”

...If that were occurring now, others might notice as he has, that you don’t see a lot of actionable items during city council meetings.

...A lot of time is spent by council on committee work,” he notes and advocates “standardization of committee’s presentations to council, their mandate, and what outcomes should be, set through an organizational oversight committee.

...The city continues to hire consultants to do research on city projects, often paying them thousands of dollars to do a job that might easily be done in house. Van Damme believes that we should interact with city administration and have them do some preliminary work before we engage consultants.

...James believes in setting long term goals to have a vision for the future of St.

...With his background in information technology, it seems inevitable that technology would be integrated into his plans for the future development of St. ... Van Damme points out, “I know the city has to grow, but the city doesn’t have to necessarily pay for that growth.”

...However, he argues that it is better to pay $20,000 more for a house than to have current residents shoulder the burden of infrastructure costs as high as $95 million up front. He says $20,000 dollars is comparable to normal fluctuations in the housing market and buyers would benefit from the infrastructure as would the rest of the community for the long term.

...“We can use Smart Growth, to our advantage and start putting a green footprint on our city, perhaps using federal and provincial funding.”

James Van Damme believes his vision is suitable for our city because, “eco-city, eco-vision works for St.

...Other facets of Van Damme’s vision for the future are the development of clean power, such as solar, attracting more commercial business to annexed lands, and development of downtown.

...This includes adding commercial space, using Servus Place as an entertainment venue, setting up a transportation hub nearby, and encouraging community atmosphere making Servus Place a flagship.

...He is starting early, but James sees the months ahead as an opportunity for citizens to get to know him and his platform.

...Jennifer, a manager at Wal-Mart, had the task of hiring someone to fill a job opening. After sorting through a stack of resumes she found four people who were equally qualified. Jennifer decided to call the four in and ask them only one question.

...The day came and as the four sat around the conference room table, Jennifer asked, 'What is the fastest thing you know of?'

...'Hmmm...let me see 'A blink' it comes and goes and you don't know that it ever happened. A BLINK is the fastest thing I know of.'

...'The blink of an eye, that's a very popular cliché for speed. ‘She then turned to the third man, who was contemplating his reply.

'Well out at my dad's ranch, you step out of the house and on the wall there's a light switch. When you flip that switch, way out across the pasture the light on the barn comes on in less than an instant. 'Yep, TURNING ON A LIGHT is the fastest thing I can think of'.

Jennifer was very impressed with the third answer and thought she had found her man. 'It 's hard to beat the speed of light,' she said.

Turning to BUBBA, the fourth and final man, Jennifer posed the same question.

Ol' Bubba replied, 'After hearing the previous three answers, it's obvious to me that the fastest thing known is DIARRHEA.'

...'You see, the other day I wasn't feeling so good, and I ran for the bathroom, but before I could THINK, BLINK, or TURN ON THE LIGHT, I had already crapped my pants.'

BUBBA is now the new greeter at that Wal-Mart!

You probably will think of this every time you enter a Wal-Mart

Folks who live in this part of Texas are used to hardened criminals doing hard time.

Once a year the cops round up all the hardened criminals who have failed to pay their fines on time.

Usually the suspects are those folks who didn’t pay their speeding tickets, but this year the long arm of the law just got longer.

Now they’re after folks who held illegal garage sales and a host of other violations.

What violations you ask?

Sometimes children don’t know everything about their parents lives.

Such was the case when siblings began to clean out the home of their recently deceased Mother in Helena, Montana.

A box, long ago sealed and stored in the basement revealed much more than they bargained for and left them speechless about their mother’s earlier first marriage.

It even contained her picture. But the picture had a bullet hole in it. That was from the bullet that killed her first husband as he carried the picture in his breast pocket in the Korean War.

Well worth the read and not to be missed.

Celebrations and parades are put on just prior to the observance of Lent.

Over the past few weeks parades and celebrations have taken place throughout Europe, the Caribbean and South America. An estimated 730,000 foreign tourists, many fleeing snowy winter conditions in Europe and the United States, traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for this year's celebrations.

...Tomorrow Night At LB’s Pub

Feb.-23rd - Norm Henze - Gord Macdonald - Chris Durand and Darryl (Scmidtty) Schmidt.

This former show has a special place in my heart due to how much I learned about being a, soft touch, yet push drummer. These musicians started this acoustic stage and built a foundation of new players and a new library of songs to play. Norm Henze's brainstorming homework to pick tunes that would fit the bill of being an acoustic open stage worked well. Working along side Gord Macdonald who showed his guts in doing most of the vocals and getting off his bass guitar at times to show his skills on the guitar live made this a very interesting match to play along with. Darrell Schmidt Scmidtty is a careful drummer who respects what else is happening on stage and adjusts his playing style accordingly just as I would.

This jam was not supposed to include drummers on stage but we were so careful in our pushing the songs quietly that it seemed to work and attracted a few drummers who came and became a little smarter about how to really play live. The addition of Chris Durand made and broke this jam wide open. Chris Durand brought the blues style and powerful emotional vocals and added more to the library of jam tunes and this started to attract even more new players. His brilliance as a guitarist on both acoustic and electric guitar made you want to get down to Wednesday night and play.

I wanted to show this show off to people who did not get a chance to enjoy it and mostly for those who were regulars at the show. Good friends, food, drink, and care free live music where everyone could play and the time clock never mattered. Whhooosh 3:00 a.m., remember Norm?

Thinking back to the dozens of cars I have owned in my lifetime, I have witnessed the accessory become the standard feature over the years.

Back then we had to pay extra for an automatic transmission for example.

Ditto for power brakes or power steering or power windows.

Nowadays vehicles come with all that stuff as standard equipment, but they also come with a host of other conveniences for today’s drivers.

What’s your favourite option?

"Make a noise like a frog - because Grandma said that as soon as you croak, were all going to Disney Land!

...I watched as he brushed each cob with butter, then tossed on a big spoonful of crumbled queso (Mexican cheese) and then topped it all off with a sprinkle of salt and chili pepper flakes.

...This time we were at Los Nortenos (The Northerners), which seemed fitting as here we were in the North-Easternmost corner of Mexico.

...Other than a bit of salt, they typically are not seasoned to avoid interference with the flavor that is given by being roasted for eight hours over slow burning charcoal.

Even though they looked delicious to me, I was sure hoping they wouldn’t bring a whole one to the table for us.

...I noted that the Spanish side had more detail, while the English side was kept simpler, but it was clearly meant to appear to be an equivalent direct translation.

...One of the menu items on the Spanish side offered Cabrito en Sangre which is directly translated as Kid in Blood. The blood of the goat is saved at slaughter time and this is used as the base of the sauce the goat is simmered in and served with.

...I wondered whether they would really prepare an American style gravy to go with the roasted goat or whether they would serve the Cabrito en Sangre with it’s unique “gravy”.

...I understood why they fudged the name on the menu – it certainly did not translate to English in an appetizing way. When I thought more about it, our Canadian/American gravy was not that much different in that we start our gravy with the drippings from the meats we roast.

We were there only for their most famous specialty, Cabrito al Pastor, the plain roasted baby goat.

...Chef leans over and whispers that she wishes we could take a bite, chew, taste and then spit it out like we sometimes do when testing multiple recipe variations. ... Things always taste better when you are hungry, and even great food can taste mediocre or worse when one is full.

...I thought we would surely need the aid of a giant shoehorn considering the quantity that all of us somehow managed to consume.

...We all dig out our passports and hand them up towards the driver who gives them all to the Customs guard.

Just like the night before, the Customs guard walks around the van tapping the panels for suspicious sounds and scans the wheel wells with a flashlight. They never ask us to get out, but each time on this trip that we returned from Mexico, they would always exclaim with surprise that there was a Canadian in the van. Then they would crane their head in to get a good look at it.

...After a short but blessed nap, we all present ourselves at the doorway of the tiny household of our next hostess.

...Our entire hog herd crowds into her tiny humid kitchen and hover over the stove to see what’s cooking. ... Pollo de Arroz (chicken with rice), Carne Guisada (pork stew), Charro Beans (seasoned simmered pinto beans), Fidello (Mexican chicken noodle soup) and wonderful Queso Enchiladas with a rich mole sauce.

...It may be exotic and ethnic to me, but it’s good old home cooking to them.

Crowded elbow to elbow around her table, we tuck into it as if we haven’t eaten all day.

...The small warm room encloses us like a cocoon and we are so comfortable we linger over our food.

Grave Situation At Chicago’s O’Hare Airport

SINC SAYS:

Here is a link to the entire story entitled “Chamber supports housing proposal”, where Chamber chair Mike Howes is quoted as saying, “We just think it's a good thing.

...This time a reversal as they are supporting the bid to build the Habitat project over the objection of neighbourhood residents.

...At best, all they will accomplish is to rile the residents of Akinsdale, whom the Chamber has obviously forgotten are among their member’s customers.

Might the only outcome for the Chamber be peed off customers who refuse to support Chamber members any longer over their involvement?

...This yarn was sent to us by a long time lady reader of SAP, who claims that this is sooo true, because she’s been there, done that. She is betting that it will have our lady readers rolling on the floor laughing and might just give our male readers some idea just why their better halves take so long to make a bathroom stop:

...When you have to visit a public toilet, you usually find a line of women, so you smile politely and take your place.

...It doesn't matter, the wait has been so long you are about to wet your pants!

...You would hang your purse on the door hook, if there was one, so you carefully, but quickly drape it around your neck, (Mom would turn over in her grave if you put it on the FLOOR!)

...You'd love to sit down, but having not taken time to wipe the seat or to lay toilet paper on it, you hold 'The Stance.'

To take your mind off your trembling thighs, you reach for what you discover to be the empty toilet paper dispenser.

In your mind, you can hear your mother's voice saying, 'Dear, if you had tried to clean the seat, you would have KNOWN there was no toilet paper!'

...You remember the tiny tissue that you blew your nose on yesterday - the one that's still in your purse (the purse around your neck, that now you have to hold up trying not to strangle yourself at the same time).

...The door hits your purse, which is hanging around your neck in front of your chest and you and your purse topple backward against the tank of the toilet.

...you scream, as you reach for the door, dropping your precious, tiny, crumpled tissue in a puddle on the floor, while losing your footing altogether and sliding down directly onto the toilet seat.

...Your bare bottom has made contact with every imaginable germ and life form on the uncovered seat because YOU never laid down toilet paper - not that there was any, even if you had taken time to try.

You know that your mother would be utterly appalled if she knew, because you're certain her bare bottom never touched a public toilet seat because, frankly, dear, 'You just don't KNOW what kind of diseases you could get'.

By this time, the automatic sensor on the back of the toilet is so confused that it flushes, propelling a stream of water like a fire hose against the inside of the bowl and spraying a fine mist of water that covers your bottom and runs down your legs and into your shoes.

The flush somehow sucks everything down with such force and you grab onto the empty toilet paper dispenser for fear of being dragged in too.

...You can't figure out how to operate the taps with the automatic sensors, so you wipe your hands with spit and a dry paper towel and walk past the line of women still waiting.

...A kind soul at the very end of the line points out a piece of toilet paper trailing from your shoe.

...You yank the paper from your shoe, plonk it in the woman's hand and tell her warmly, 'Here, you just might need this.

...Annoyed, he asks, 'What took you so long and why is your purse hanging around your neck?

...It's so the other girl can hold the door, hang onto your bag and hand you Kleenex under the door.

We’ve been told many times that Dolphins are among the smartest of animals.

Stories abound of their exploits with navies around the world in retrieving items from the ocean floor well out of reach of scuba divers.

And many have been to sea world type places to see them perform for the crowd.

But who knew they surf for the fun of it when in the wild?

This collection of photos taken off the coast of South Africa show the surfing waves as high as 25 feet.

We’ve all done it, haven’t we? You know, sniffed the milk when we noticed it “expired” yesterday to see if it was still drinkable or OK for our coffee.

But how accurate are those printed dates anyway?

According to this article, not very accurate.

It seems we put way to much emphasis on the “best before” date and are likely throwing out perfectly good food.

The same thing likely applies to prescription drugs. My doctor once told me not to worry about my nitro spray being a month past its due date for example.

Do you follow those dates?

People do eat the strangest things and even I have tried pickled pig’s feet on occasion.

But who has ever heard of pickled pig’s lips?

I mean the very thought of kissing a pig is a turn off for most folks, isn’t it?

Anyway, the plant that processes and jars the things has burned down leaving lip lovers in the lurch.

Anyone wanna suck lips?
