Lawn bowls is a hotbed of drug use, with sports scientists using all sorts of concoctions to keep players alive for their next game. There is also evidence of widespread corruption, with meat raffle prizes offered to bribe players to keep quiet about the sport’s sordid goings on. Arthur Crimshaw, head of Australian Bowling, denies any wrong doing saying it is perfectly natural for players to want to be kept alive. But he refused to answer many questions at a press conference, mainly because his hearing aid was turned down too low. Some players have been found to be wearing electronic devices to artificially stimulate their heart, giving them an advantage over other players who don’t use the device and are … well, dead. Others are taking stimulants to keep them awake during the game. These drugs have also been passed to spectators so they don’t fall asleep when games are televised. The government has announced a probe into the sport. Crimshaw said his players were used to probes, just as long as they’ve been sterilized and are not too cold. We withheld that letter in hopes of a reply from Parker, but since it has taken so long, we publish it here now to offer some explanation to residents as to the true facts about that Starbucks outlet. We still await any official answer from any member of council other than MacKay as to whether or not taxpayers are subsidizing that Starbucks, I submit that we very likely are doing just that until the city can prove me wrong. ...In regard to your question as to whether the $80,000 subsidy of the Skybox Grill company is included in the $37,000 profit of the city's Starbucks operation is a good one. ...One part of the transaction involved compensation or a subsidy to the Skybox Grill to vacate space we leased to them for a nominal fee that we now required to operate a Starbucks. ...This small outlet was operated by the Skybox Grill and was leased to them for a nominal fee, $1 per year or something along those lines. The idea at the time was to provide them with another way to make profit to subsidize the marginal restaurant and bar operations upstairs. The Starbucks transaction pays Skybox Grill roughly $80,000 per year to sublease back to the city, space that we previously leased to the Skybox Grill for $1 per year and in effect provides a $79,999 annual subsidy to this business. Opening a Starbucks was not just about opening a coffee shop it was also about subsidizing a marginal restaurant that had changed hands many times due to poor profitability. Having a restaurant in Servus Place provides some benefit to the city as it opens doors to host different events that might not be possible without having a restaurant. ...At one point the above subsidy was confidential, however an unknown resident was able to access this information on the city website due to poor IT security. ...Anyone who takes a few courses in accounting will tell you that at some point, profit and loss is a conceptual idea. ...Obviously $37,000 is not a great investment considering it cost the city about 300K to get into this line of business, considering the risk and competition we now face from Tim Hortons across the street. There is a reason that the private sector did not make the investment in a coffee shop at Servus Place as it carries a lot of risk and very little profit potential. ...It is sure a refreshing change contrary to what this council tried to pull 'in camera' when they floated this awful deal, thinking the citizens of St. ...I do take exception however, with your statement "$37,000 is not a great investment considering it cost the city about 300K to get into this line of business". A video of a tiny goat riding on the back of a white horse against a picturesque backdrop has garnered tens of thousands of views online. Okay, there’s global warming and nuclear North Korea and some other big topics out there, but one thing this spring weather has us worried about is the age-old problem of keeping your beer cold. Thankfully, a University of Washington climate scientist decided to tackle the problem and found out that a romantically dew covered bottle or glass of beer/wine cooler/chilled white wine (etc.) will warm up faster because of the condensation on the bottle. So, want to keep that bottle cold longer – keep it dry.

Administration will also ensure that all interested partner groups and organizations are considered, as the scope and facility program is re-examined. ...Through the study, the 50+ Club identified a larger community need and outlined a concept for a Community Support Centre that would include space for other support agencies within the community. ...In our recent discussion you had asked for some background and explanation in regards to the community support building and how it is affected by DARP. In my opinion the proposal to construct an underground parkade and to spend an additional $9 million of public funds makes no sense and provides no value to the public. As a result, I put forward a motion to abandon the DARP style parkade and save the public $9 million. ...There is really no defence for this kind of poor decision making other than to attempt to back pedal and say that we haven’t spent the money yet, however the question remains why not end this costly and foolish decision now? ...It's too bad that your fellow council members are unable to comprehend that its time for restraint, or they would halt this travesty in its tracks and the sooner the better. Our downtown is just fine as it is and it certainly does not deserve to be torn apart, streets narrowed and moved and parking lost to multi million dollar parkade after parkade to fill the vision of a wayward bunch of council members who cannot see the error of their ways. If they must build a Community Support Centre, get it the hell out of downtown to higher ground where it will cost $9 million less, although I even question the real need for such a building when places like Grandin Mall sit empty with oodles of available space that could be utilized for far less money. I might add that the scariest part of the entire press release above is this sentence: "The Community Support Centre would be a shared community facility in St. ...It is little more than more empire building by an out of control city administration and completely misguided members of council who will be the ruin of our community with their ever increasing spending. Every other government body in the country is practicing restraint while these poor misguided souls banter about $40 million funds and $27 million buildings like we are made of money. ... « ... ... » ...

Patton staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking buddy, Paddy. He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Kathleen. He tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step. As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump. A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful. Managing not to yell, Patton sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding. He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood. He then hid the now almost empty Band-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to bed. In the morning, Patton woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Kathleen staring at him from across the room. She said, 'You were drunk again last night weren't you?' The Airbus A320 was making its final approach to Glasgow Airport on 2 December when an object passed about 300ft underneath it. The last known rhinoceroses in Mozambique have been wiped out by poachers apparently working in cahoots with the game rangers responsible for protecting them, it has emerged. Wildlife authorities believe the poachers were able to track the rhinoceroses with the help of game rangers working in the Limpopo National Park. The 15 threatened animals were shot dead for their horns last month in the Mozambican part of Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which also covers South Africa and Zimbabwe. They were thought to be the last of an estimated 300 that roamed through the special conservation area when it was established as "the world's greatest animal kingdom" in a treaty signed by the three countries' then presidents in 2002. Albert's Place: When you made your motion regarding the LRT, did you sense the public saw the LRT study as a total waste of today's dollar when it would not be a reality for over 30 years? Councillor MacKay: There are two LRT projects here, one is Edmonton's proposal to build an LRT to the old Newman College site near our borders. ... We do not have the population now and with a growth rate under 1% it will be hundreds of years before we get to a population level where the economics of LRT work. ... Albert's Northern border is not something that is likely to be funded and currently the LRT line to the old Newman college site has no money attached. ...Albert's Place: Do you expect council to support transferring that $400,000 to whistle cessation, or is that likely to fail, or was that your intent with the motion, to get both the LRT and the whistle cessation halted? Councillor MacKay: Spending $534,000 on an LRT study today is not a wise use of public funds because we know that if the LRT ever transitioned from fiction to reality we would have to redo the study in the future anyway and spend the money twice. I want council to think about whether this $534,000 we are spending on the LRT could be better spent on other items such as the train whistle cessation or left in the hands of the taxpayer. $134,000 of my motion is to transfer the money to the operating reserve which can be used to reduce the tax rate in the following year. This is not an on-going expense; it is a one-time expenditure to solve a long term problem and improve the quality of life for thousands of people. ...Albert's Place: Why do you think there is a desire on council to push through such an expensive whistle cessation plan when about 75% of residents have no issues with train whistles? A current Gazette poll shows that is the case and no one I have spoken with has any burning desire to blow nearly a million bucks to stop a train whistle. ...I did not always support train whistle cessation but in hearing from broad users young and old I have become convinced of the severity of this issue and the breadth of people that it affects. This is not an issue that affects just a few individuals, hundreds of people are bothered by train whistles and it just seems to be an issue that can be addressed to improve the quality of life for our residents. Personally I like train whistles but I can get used to being without them if it improves the quality of live for someone else in the city. ...Someone on the next council has to be aggressive and stand up for our taxpayers and make sure that we are getting the best deal we can. ... We hosted a dinner party for family far and wide and everyone was encouraged to bring all their children as well. All during dinner my four-year-old niece stared at me sitting across from me. The girl could hardly eat her food for staring. I checked my shirt for spots, felt my face for food, patted my hair in place but nothing stopped her from staring at me. I tried my best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for me. I finally asked her, "Why are you staring at me?" Everyone at the table had noticed her behaviour and the table went quiet for her response. My little niece said, "I'm just waiting to see how you drink like a fish." Thanks to our general confusion over how planes stay in the air and too many viewings of Final Destination, we tend to assume that a plane crash is a no-live situation. But, surprisingly, the numbers are actually in our favour. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, there was a 95.7% overall survival rate in all the commercial airline accidents between 1983 and 2000. If you're still a tad suspicious of this fact then these stunning pictures from German photographer Dietmar Eckell should help to convince. He visited 15 crash sites where miraculously, all passengers survived, and took some incredible shots of the planes that still remain. See the photos here on ShortList.

1950 Chevrolet Club Coupe With 437 Actual Miles

This 1950 Chevrolet was purchased new by Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Trueblood of Modesto, California. Shortly after purchasing this car, Mr. Trueblood took a day off to go fishing. While waiting for the "big one" to bite he witnessed a woman fall out of her boat. Mr. Trueblood jumped in to help only to fall victim of a fatal heart attack. Mrs. Trueblood returned the car home and placed it in the garage for the next 12 years. The odometer reading at that time (1962) was 413 miles. Complete story and photos here.

What started as a novel food experiment at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas has turned into a super-sized food franchise -- all centered around a two-foot-long hot dog affectionately known as the "Boomstick." Named after the bat used by Texas Rangers slugger Nelson Cruz, the $26 Boomstick is a 2-foot all-beef hot dog, smothered in chili, nacho cheese, jalapenos and caramelized onions, all on top of a massive potato bun. 35 Years Later, Man Trying To Solve Plane Crash Mystery

Some 35 years ago, Arden Van Horssen was hunting near Augusta when through his binoculars he saw a flash of white on an opposite hillside. It ended up being the wreckage of a small airplane. When Van Horssen, a pilot himself, hiked to the crash site, he could tell the plane was upside down when it crashed into some large pine trees about 50 feet from the top of the mountain. However, other than the tips of the propeller being bent, the plane was almost unscathed. More in the Great Falls Tribune.

The Colorado-based chain hopes the ribs, its biggest new food launch in six years, will help bring new customers into its restaurants. Part of that investigation revealed that the city had agreed to pay the former occupants of the space Starbucks now occupies, some $80,000 a year for a period of years as compensation for giving up that retail space. Now city administration is saying the outlet made a profit of about $37,000, but is that the case? Was the reported $80,000 annual payment to the former leaseholder added to the operational cost of Starbucks before that profit of $37,000 was declared? With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags. Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level..)
