Friday's Rainmaker Rodeo Action
Hi Don,
Some quick snaps from the St. Albert Kinsmen Rainmaker Rodeo Friday night.
Vance Kremp of Barrhead on Haywire in the bareback event:

Lyle Kathrein of Mayerthorpe misses his calf in calf roping:

Steer rassler Jared Thompson of St. Everly, Iowa, makes a grab on his steer:

Jesse Anton of Strathmore gets a good ride atop Amazing Grace in the Saddle Bronc competition:

As for Friday night, the cowboys did not fare well. The infield is a little soft so the livestock didn't have a chance to show their "real" stuff of which they are capable.

This week we focus on water safety and in particular life jackets and personal flotation devices also known as PFDs. There have been some recent accidents in the news that brings this issue to the forefront for me. Let's start with weather conditions while out at the lake.
Keep your eye on the sky for changing conditions. Alberta weather is know for rain one minute, then snow the next. Environment Canada has a cool web site for looking at satellite imagery and doppler radar that shows approaching rain and thunder storms. Their web site is http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca There are a selection of weather receivers that you can purchase at The Source or Radio Shack.
The May long weekend was the time of year that people are itching to get outdoors. The weather may be nice but the water is very cold as the ice has not being off for long. Hypothermia will set in a few minutes. It makes muscle movement quite hard and means that swimming is next to impossible.
There are two different types of buoyancy devices that can make all of the difference. A life jacket has to have the ability to turn you over in the water with your head up. This prevents drowning in the event you hit your head while falling from the boat. I think these devices should be law that all children under the age of ten have to wear. I see lots of parents with small children have them wear a PFD. The PFD does not turn you face up when in the water. I do not recommend a PFD for anybody. Check life jacket for approval under transport Canada and ULC. Check the date of the device to make sure it has not expired. Transport Canada has a good web site for Boater Education.

Here are photos of Dave the pro-hunter and myself out catching walleye from the North Saskatchewan River up stream near Devon. I am holding a goldeye (left) that also can be caught on the fly rod.

Any large floating fly will do and as usual, the evening bite is quite fun. We used black and yellow 1/4 ounce jigs with rubber bodies tipped with a frozen minnows. I highly recommend even the novice fishermen to try the mighty NSR.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Feherty Quotes:
“They don’t do comedy at the Masters. The Masters, for me, is like holding onto a really big collection of gas for a week. It’s like having my buttocks surgically clenched at Augusta General Hospital on Wednesday, and surgically unclenched on Monday on the way to Hilton Head.”

Return of the Vacuum Tube
26/05/2012 05:24

They're actually vacuum tubes—the predecessors of the silicon transistor. Vacuum tubes went the way of the dinosaurs in the 1960s, but researchers have now brought them back to life, creating a nano-sized version that's faster and hardier than the transistor.
It's even able to survive the harsh radiation of outer space.
Everything old is new again story here.

More New Taxes Courtesy Of This Council
Hello All:
I've attached the May Newsletter (read it here) which highlights the increase in taxes coming to you soon courtesy of you current city Council. Take a look to find out how they might impact you based on your neighbourhood and how assessment values changed last year. Some folks will have an increase less than 3.8% and some will have more than 3.8%. In addition, most homeowners will see their utility costs increase another 9.3% this year to build the city's utility savings account.
Also, the next regular members meeting for SATA will be June 26th, 2012. Please join us at the Community Hall at 7:30 pm.
Lynda Flannery
Director
St. Albert Taxpayers Association
SINC SAYS:
Raising utility rates again by nearly 10% completes the third consecutive year and now this council has driven utility rates up by 30% in just three years, an inexcusable burden on taxpayers. Shame on this misguided council.
The Photography Of Paul C.
It seems our photo crew are really into sunsets this week with this offering taken near Sangudo and a storm building near the same location.

Mama's Bible
25/05/2012 05:11

One evening over dinner, they discussed the 95th birthday gifts they were able to give their elderly mother.
The first said, "You know I had a big house built for Mama."
The second said, "And I had a large theater built in the house."
The third said, "And I had my Mercedes dealer deliver an SL600 to her."
The fourth said, "You know how Mama loved reading the Bible and you know she can't read anymore because she can't see very well. I met this
preacher who told me about a parrot who could recite the entire Bible. It took ten preachers almost eight years to teach him. I had to pledge to contribute $50,000 a year for five years to the church, but it was worth it. Mama only has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it."
The other brothers were impressed. After the celebration Mama sent out "Thank You" notes.
She wrote: Milton, the house you built is so huge that I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house. Thanks anyway."
"Marvin, I am too old to travel. I stay home; I have my groceries delivered, so I never use the Mercedes. The thought was good. Thanks."
"Michael, you gave me an expensive theater with Dolby sound and it can hold 50 people, but all of my friends are dead, I've lost my hearing and I'm nearly blind. I'll never use it. Thank you for the gesture just the same."
"Dearest Melvin, you were the only son to have the good sense to give a little thought to your gift. The chicken was tough, but delicious. Thank you so much."
Love, Mama

The Photography Of Al Popil
Hi Don,
Some snaps from yesterday's (Saturday) performance of the Big Horn rodeo in Caroline, Alberta. Very impressed with the stock and as usual, the stock won.

A saddle bronc rider gets barrel rolled by his mount and a first time novice bareback rider gets tossed. The saddle bronc rider escaped serious injury but a couple of contestants had an ambulance ride to the hospital.
My first time here and, photographically speaking, an excellent rodeo corral layout to shoot from.
