We’ve Helped Put St. Albert On The Map

St. Albert’s Place got quite a surprise recently when we were contacted by Kevin Costner. Yes, that’s right, THE Kevin Costner of “Dancing With Wolves” fame among many other movies.

If you recall about a year ago now, we ran some dramatic footage of the wind storm that drove through the Big Valley Jamboree site and collapsed the stage’

One lady, Donna Moore, lost her life in that collapse.

Kevin and his band Modern West were on stage on the sidelines watching the act before them perform when the big storm front hit. They were entangled in the stage wreckage and two members of the band seriously injured. A steel beam crashed through their tour bus, just a few feet from one band member.

Kevin and the band wanted to produce a video, honouring the life of Donna Moore to be included on his web site on the anniversary of the tragedy.

We happily supplied the rights to the footage and wound up with a front page mention on Kevin’s web site along with a hot link to St. Albert’s Place seen in this screen shot, bottom left below.

You might say we have just helped to put St. Albert on the map.

I was invited to the Big Valley Jamboree to meet Kevin in person today, but am already committed to our current trip. It is something I will regret as long as I live, an opportunity missed, never to be recovered.

Here is a look at Kevin and the band’s thoughts as they experienced that horror a year ago today along with some graphic photos of the damage.

Petition Against DARP Started By SATA

Hello all:  Call to Action:

  • SIGN PETITION & CIRCULATE IT
I have just opened the following petition on this site.

Please take a minute to view it and, if you agree, sign the petition on line.  Also, please forward my e-mail to your e-mail contacts in St. Albert and ask them to sign the petition.  Also, print off a copy and go door to door in your neighbourhood, and ask for signatures.  I'll be collecting petitions prior to the continuation of the Public Hearing on DARP on August 16th.

Here’s the link to download your copy to print.

  • COME AND VISIT SATA AT FARMERS MARKET
We also have a pamphlet on the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan.  Its available at the Farmer's Market tomorrow where SATA has a booth.  We'll be there and will be talking with folks on this and other issues  (211 just west of La Crème on St. Thomas Street).  Come and visit us.

  • COME TO TOWN HALL AT COMMUNITY LEAGUE
In addition, the St. Albert Community League will be hosting a Town Hall Forum on DARP on Tuesday August 10th at its Hall on 17 Perron Street.  The League was broadsided by the Plan proposing it be taken over by Arts and Heritage for an expanded Profiles Gallery.  Check out What's On in the Gazette for more information.

  • GO TO PUBLIC HEARING 5:00 PM AUGUST 16TH
Without Community action, Council will pass this plan on August 16th 2010 and we will be on the hook for what it proposes, including that the City "kick start" the plan by starting on the 17 public projects it proposes.  Go to the hearing in Council Chambers, 3rd floor, St. Albert Place and let Council hear your thoughts.
